About Eczema
What is eczema?
Eczema is a common skin disorder characterized by dry, itchy, scaly skin and rashes. Often occurring as a result of an immune system response to an irritant either through contact, inhalation or ingestion.
Stress and any other emotional discord may make eczema worse or awaken dormant eczema, but they do not cause the disorder.
The symptoms of eczema can include itch, redness, swelling, scaling, cracking and crusting. Scratching makes the eczema symptoms worse, the dry skin will become redder in colour and may even crack as a result of scratching. Scratching may also lead to infection and the more you scratch, the more it itches.
If one or both parents have eczema or other disorders such as asthma or hay fever, their children are more likely to develop eczema. In addition, about 75 percent of children with eczema also develop hay fever or asthma.
Can eczema be cured?
Eczema will, in most cases, clear up over time. Some sufferers will require treatment, for others it may seem to spontaneously go away, maybe as they grow out of it. However, most adult sufferers will find their skin remains sensitive throughout their life.
